To take or not to take an automobile?

If a few positive aspects that can influence to take a car rental in Mexico in Yucatan.

• if you are definitely going to travel, or visit beaches, cenotes and … – here a car will really save you money, as trips with excursions will be more expensive;
• getting from the airport or to other resorts – I would highly recommend this method if you are 3+ people, drive to or return to the airport, further we will consider cases of getting a rental car in one city and returning in another;
• if your group is more than 3-4 people – this may be cheaper;
• if you do not focus on beach vacation in Cancun or Playa del Carmen, on the principle of “arrived and from the beach not a foot”;
• if you go to Tulum on vacation – you need a car 100%, because without it you will not get anywhere.

What company to choose

There are several options to choose from, usually choosing between international and local. It is often believed that international ones are more reliable.
In my own experience, I take cars from local or smaller companies in order to explore something new.

Options for choosing or comparing prices can be conducted like this:

1. Via an aggregator – an app or website that gives out most operators with all prices. I’m used to the German https://www.billiger-mietwagen.de/, but if you don’t know German, it won’t be at all convenient
2. Google search, although often the first pages are again full of international operators or aggregators.
3. Google maps if you are immediately in Mexico to search and see ratings.

In my case I chose through google maps and also by recommendation. I chose the company “Americe rent a car”, the more the rating was not bad, and in addition, I took my car not on arrival in Cancun, but in Playa del Carmen.

Why I did not rent a car through an aggregator

No prejudice, my friend just used their services twice and was very satisfied, I chose not in advance, but on the spot and saw that the prices were not very different. In addition, specifically on Billiger-mietwagen I was confused by the fact that the rating of most suppliers was low, there were many complaints about the fact that the car was not issued, the money was not returned. Where the rating was excellent, the prices were already unpleasant. That’s why I chose the company by recommendations and using google, as well as, reviews on google maps.

Rent a car at Cancun airport

The airport is very big and car rental companies are just as many. I did not inquire at the operator’s desks about the cost of renting, but my friends pre-booked at the airport to return the car to the airport later. For sure the alternative of getting a car at the airport is a great thing to do, as getting out of the airport is quite expensive, about which I described in a separate publication

Pick up a car in Cancun, return it in Tulum

The companies do offer these options and surprisingly for me the surcharge is quite small, about 50-60 US dollars. This may be expensive for you, but a cab for the same distance would have cost me over $170 (this is by arrangement with a trusted driver), and often could have been $250+ per trip.
