From Tulum to Cancun Airport
09.08.2024How and with what it is better to pay in Mexico
11.08.2024By cab or Uber from Cancun Airport
On arrival, I was going to go to Cancun spit for the first few days, that’s where I booked accommodation, the distance from the airport is only 7km and the car ride takes up to 25 minutes.
I read like you about Ado buses, but there are 6 of us (2 adults and 4 kids). Hence, I asked about any transfers or cab rides. On the info for tourists, the consultant immediately offered me a cab for 100 dollars to the destination, he offered me persistently, so I did not really want to take it.
At the exit, there are a lot of promoters with prices on signs. Prices for a cab I was “pleased”, for 7 km and 25 minutes of movement I was offered 130 dollars, but were willing to make a discount. The promoter, whom I just asked, despite my refusal continued to slowly pursue us, like a Komodo varan, which wanders after the victim waiting for when the victim will run out of strength and she will give up, so it was with us, but we did not want to become a victim, although the “varan” ran after us for more than 1 hour.
Later I asked another promoter, who had the same trip was 230 dollars, and he also showed me the official price))) Only 30 meters, and such different official prices, I thought. The second promoter also followed me like a Komodo dragon until he fell off. Although he haggled me down to 100 dollars.
Now the first dragon-promoter appeared again and offered a good price of 70 dollars, which we refused (for nothing). Got greedy because Uber takes 30 dollars, why 70 dollars? Because there are no options.
My result was: ADO bus, and then again Uber, the total came out 62 dollars for my family and killed 2 hours of time, although it was possible for 70 dollars and 25 minutes(((. I guess it was just the “don’t let yourself get ripped off” principle that worked.
About Uber
I managed to use Uber once. I originally wanted to use it to get from Cancun airport to Cancun beach. But Uber has an arrangement, or rather, it is not allowed in the airport and Uber service is limited in this place.
Getting to the airport by Uber is no problem, but getting out is not realistic. I punched in the nearest hotel at the airport and plotted the route from it to my hotel, Uber XL for 6 people, offered me $30 and regular economy $20 for the ride. The problem is that Uber doesn’t provide service at the airport. The local cab drivers’ prices are very high and they realize you have no alternatives.
I thought, well, I’ll walk to the hotel, it’s nothing, but these 1-1,5 km have no sidewalk and it takes 50 minutes to walk there, because it’s a detour. I used Uber already from the bus station where the ADO bus brought me.
The Uber ride was interesting. In the messages, the driver wrote me that he would wait for me in a different place than I wanted, so I did with my family and suitcases extra 700 meters. The driver thanked me very much, as he said that cabs are mafia here and this will keep him and me out of trouble.
The ride was great and I put +1 contact of the driver in my piggy bank, the contact I share with you is Will, he answers in WhatsApp (phone …..), speaks English and is studying to be a pilot, and the car is a Chrysler Voyager.
Another, probably one of the lifehacks, is to initially book a cab in the city limits, get the driver’s number, and arrange to meet him in advance. Haven’t tried it, but why not.
On the positive side, with Will I agreed on a future trip from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, and also found out other prices on his minivan, which came out cheaper than through Uber, and even more so than through cab drivers.
- Cancun – Playa del Carmen – 86 dollars.
- Cancun – Tulum – 170 dollars.
- On a car up to 5 seats, will be 30-40% cheaper, but then you definitely not to Will.
