Cenotes are holes in the ground where an underground river flows. These sinkholes are formed over a long distance. All of them are different, but all of them are united by fresh and crystal clear water.
All cenotes are paid to visit, as a rule it is 15-30 US dollars per person, depends on the cenote and the price set by the administration.
We visited 4 cenotes, different in picturesqueness, but you can choose one and just spend time there.
Rules in the cenotes
- Use sunscreen to avoid polluting the river.
- It is worth using a life jacket (they give it there), because the river is deep and in some places the depth reaches 6-8 meters, but due to the clear water you can see everything.
Natural parks often form around the cenotes, turtles come or swim to you, you see iguanas running around.
Why visit the cenotes
This is not a bad place to spend a day of relaxation. It is not hot, as a rule, as the cenote is located in a protected area and often in the rainforest. The cenote is deep but you can see everything, sometimes the depth reaches 15-20 meters. Here you can dive right under the rock. This is a great place for snorkeling.
The water in the cenotes is cold and fresh.
Services provided in the cenotes
They vary, as each cenote has its own “mafia” that charges you a fee and gives you access to the cenote. But as a rule, you can get these services:
- storage for your belongings – a locker for storing precious items
- life jackets
- masks and snorkels
- loungers
- bungee rides
- restaurant or bar
Which cenote to choose
For me, there was no global difference between the 4 cenotes visited. In one I found an additional children’s pool and a cenote in the format of a large pool, the others were characterized by a large number of caves to dive into. In many of the cenotes, spending just a few hours will be enough.
Is it worth going to more than one cenote? I think that 1-2 are enough and the rest of the time can be spent on the beach.
