15.08.2024A common scam in Mexico
Here I have tried to collect cases that I have come across directly or indirectly where you are being tried to cheat.
Tipping in restaurants
Look carefully at the check you get, it is always a printed bill. Most will immediately include the amount for service (tips), which each restaurant counts on its own principle. How and why the amount is such, I do not understand. In my practice they counted from 10 to 20%.
For 14 days I only twice saw a restaurant without included service, there just left a tip.
Perhaps this is a normal practice, but I thought it was unfair, because in this case the % of service should initially be specified in the menu.
Payment fraud
Mexican pesos are marked as $ on price tags, which is why you often don’t realize the price is in US dollars or Mexican pesos. Sometimes you may be charged in US dollars instead of pesos. This has never happened in my practice, but I have checked all debits immediately on push notification from the bank.
Cheating at a gas station
I happened to come across a lot of gas station reviews, a lot are negative and mostly related:
- Cheating at the gas station in liters.
- Deception with taking payment 2 times – took by card, although they said it did not pass and took cash.
I hope this short information will help you avoid being scammed when visiting this beautiful country!
